Media Release: Sacramento Stonewall Democrats Denounce Trump Administration Withdrawal of Guidelines that Protected Transgender Students

SACRAMENTO— The Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento

strongly objects to guidelines issued by the Trump Administration that roll back

an Obama Administration policy designed to reduce anti-transgender

discrimination in public schools.

In 2016 the Departments of Justice and Education issued comprehensive

guidance to ensure that transgender students were being treated fairly and with

dignity in public and federally funded schools, including having equal access to

sex-segregated facilities consistent with their gender identity, such as restrooms

and locker rooms.

Withdrawing the guidelines dovetails with the Justice Department’s decision this

month to step away from defending such guidance in a federal appeals court.

According to White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, “The president has

maintained for a long time that this is a states’ rights issue and not one for the

federal government.”

“This is a callous and deeply disturbing action by Mr. Trump, who is apparently

not satisfied with depriving immigrants, refugees and Muslims with basic civil

rights, but now cavalierly tosses aside transgender students as well,” said Jann

Dorothy, President of the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento, a

political organization whose singular mission is advocating on behalf of the LGBT

“Transgender youth face significant discrimination and bullying in our nation’s

schools,” Dorothy continued. “Just last year, North Carolina adopted its infamous

HB2, a law that actually required discrimination against transgender people,

including public schools. Unfortunately, several states, Texas among them, are

considering similar bills. This is misguided and tragic, as it imperils transgender

youth and sends a message that they are not worth protecting.”

Last week, in response to the DOJ’s action, more than 1,000 parents of

transgender children from 45 states, with help from the Human Rights Campaign,

sent a letter to President Trump condemning the decision and calling on his

administration to fully enforce federal civil rights laws. The parents, representing

thousands of families of transgender children across the country, wrote, “No

young person should wake up in the morning fearful of the school day ahead.

When this guidance was issued last year, it provided our families — and other

families like our own across the country — with the knowledge and security that

our government was determined to protect our children from bullying and

discrimination. Please do not take that away from us.”

The Stonewall Democratic Club condemns this unconscionable action by the

Trump Administration. We call for common decency and that all public officials

everywhere recognize discrimination experienced by the LGBT community. Stand

against bigotry in all forms.
