SACRAMENTO— The Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento is leading a protest rally at the Capitol on Thursday, May 4, to denounce the executive order President Trump plans to sign that day permitting discrimination against LGBT Americans and others by those who claim a right to “religious freedom.”

Politico reported today that Trump invited many conservative leaders to the White House on Thursday for what is expected to be the signing of his controversial executive order on religious freedom, according to several senior officials. Thursday is the National Day of Prayer and it was reported that the White House was already planning to mark the occasion with faith leaders.

Reaction among Sacramento’s LGBT community at the planned signing of the order was swift and strong.

“This order is aimed at the LGBT community, but make no mistake – it affects every other minority community in America,” said Jann Dorothy, President of the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento, a political organization whose singular mission is advocating on behalf of the LGBT community.

“With the stroke of Trump’s pen, religious bigots will now have the power to discriminate against not just LGBT Americans, but against anyone they disagree with for what they call ‘religious freedom.’ That includes women who have reproductive rights they disagree with, Muslims and others whose faith practices they disagree with, legally married same-sex couples they disagree with, and virtually anyone else they choose to target – all under the guise of so-called ‘religious liberty’. Trump is legalizing bigotry, period.”

Many Sacramento-based LGBT and community groups plan to gather at the Capitol at 6:00pm on Thursday to protest this latest executive order by Trump that is highly charged and divisive. Groups participating include the members of Sac Stonewall, the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, the Rainbow Chamber of Commerce and many other community service, women’s rights and faith-based organizations.
