High Court Abandoned Individual Rights, Stonewall Calls for Renewed Effort to Elect Pro Reproductive Rights Candidates

Sacramento, CA – On June 24, 2022, in a 6-3 ruling, the United States Supreme Court held that the United States Constitution does not protect the fundamental right to abortion, overruling the landmark decisions, Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

“This is a devastating blow for women’s rights and civil rights,” said Mario Guerrero, President of Stonewall Democrats of Greater Sacramento. “This decision will particularly impact vulnerable people with limited income and inadequate access to healthcare — folks who are often persons of color and/or immigrants.”

“An attack on reproductive justice is also an attack on all of us. By overturning Roe v. Wade, the Court has obliterated the cornerstone of liberty rights. This alone should be enough to anger and concern our community and to renew our electoral work. Of additional concern is that the precedents involving the decriminalization of sodomy and the recognition of same-sex marriage heavily depended upon Roe.”

“We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the reproductive justice movement at this crucial moment in our nation’s history. With the mid-term, state, and local elections coming up in the fall of 2022, Stonewall urges all Democrats throughout the country to rise up, get active, and vote like our lives depend on it, because they do.”

The mission of the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento is to advance equal rights for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We will support public policies that advance that mission in the United States, the State of California, and the greater Sacramento area.
